The Trad305

The overall story of jazz begins in New Orleans, Louisiana back in the 19-teens around the time of the first jazz recording in 1917 with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB) and their Livery Stable Blues. This could be thought of as the official start to America’s true art form, jazz, but in actuality various works previous to this had elements of improvisation, collaboration, and call & response. The TRAD305 is the ensemble in the Damian J Project that brings this initial history of jazz to life. When this music first began there was little electricity much less electrical instruments and so this open source musical collaboration involves several musicians all focused on sub-genres such as: Dixieland, Tin Pan Alley, Ragtime, American Songbook, Hot Jazz, and several others encompassing the period of traditional jazz from 1914 until the rise of swing in the 1930s. This is the music before swing, the birth of jazz. Louis Armstrong’s “Hot Fives” recording, Fats Waller’s and Victor Young’s epic compositions, they all contributed to what we know today as traditional or trad jazz. We convey this message through two main instruments: the clarinet and the banjolele. To that combination we add our vintage stritch soprano saxophone, contrabass, trombone, trumpet, and tenor saxophone. The TRAD305 has such a full sound for a collectively small group. We have melodies and improvisation going back and forth through the different voices as well as deep rooted vocals sung by Damian J. Since January 2014 the TRAD305 has set out to establish traditional jazz in the 305. Founding members include Jorge Gomez Abrante and Damian J Sanchez, they set out to “bring dem good ol’ good ones back” and spearhead the Miami Jazz Renaissance. Performances extend as far as Portland, Oregon as part of a self-made tour in the summer of 2015. In December 2015, the TRAD305 won 2nd place in the Miami citywide competition Buskerfest Miami which focuses to showcase the city’s very best talent performing live in the streets of Downtown Miami as part of a massive music festival. Then in December 2016, the TRAD305 returned to Buskerfest and won 1st place gaining local notoriety for their tremendous energy and transcendental appeal. Also in May 2015, the TRAD305 won 1st place in the MiamiMade Concert Series, a yearlong event featuring the best in South Florida from every genre of music performing on a monthly basis at the historic Trinity Cathedral. This led to the ensemble’s first recording project at the Ai Studios in Miami due to be completed in 2017. The TRAD305 has performed all over Miami’s thriving multicultural scene including the North Beach Bandshell, Mansion, Annual PG Kids Fundraisers, Lagniappe House, and has accompanied such top tier artists as Tito Puente Jr. The TRAD305 has performed for numerous corporate events, private parties, and weddings.
