Swingin' Sensations & The Sterling Standards

When the Damian J Project began back in 2013, a group of swing dancers known officially as the South Florida Lindy Collective took interest in the traditional jazz component of the project however they wanted to see if a swing dance could be realized with that era of music and rhythm being showcased for
them to dance to. The era of swing music took place back when the big band was the most popular type of group to listen to in terms of jazz. Swing began after traditional jazz in the 1930s and went on to develop as far as into the 1950s. Our Swingin’ Sensations was thus born in January of 2014 for the dance
that took place at the German American Hall of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The group featured such incredible talent as Shay Eischen on the drums, Axel Aleman on the electric bass, Mike Bishop on the guitar, Carlos Avila on trombone, and Damian J on all the reeds and vocals. The group aimed to bring the
sounds of 1930s and 40s swing to life with selections from Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and many more. Due to the large size of the group it is rare Our Swingin’ Sensations perform which is why The Sterling Standards was created which consists of a reduced trio version of the
swing era tunes. The Sterling Standards feature legendary London born Mike Wood on the guitar and Iranian bassist Ali Darvish along with Damian J on the reeds and vocals. The Sterling Standards premiered as part of the jazz series at Casabe305 Bistro in 2016. When either swing era ensemble
performs the crowds go wild. Labor Day 2015, Our Swingin’ Sensations played for a special presentation at Coral Gables’ Open Stage Club and had a tremendous performance. The collaboration features Roberto Gonzalez on piano switching with the guitar at times. An extensive swing library adds to the
nostalgic sounds of the big bands for this reduced size orchestra and trio. Our Swingin’ Sensations’ personnel were also chosen to record the debut album for the Damian J Project, “Sessions 33 1/3” and have since not had another performance. More information and footage can be found under the Damian J Project.
